Today, the Karen Women’s Organization (KWO) officially launches the 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women. For many years, KWO has carried out this campaign with strong commitment, and this year our theme is “All women deserve to be safe, equal and respected.”

This year’s theme, “All women deserve to be safe, equal and respected,” was chosen because women in our communities continue to experience insecurity, inequality, and a lack of respect. Many women feel unsafe while traveling, and some have been subjected to sexual violence. Even within their own homes, women may face oppression from fathers, uncles, or brothers. Women are still denied equal participation in decisions about pregnancy, child-rearing, and household matters, and gender inequality continues in the workplace.

Women living in conflict-affected areas face the most critical conditions. Since the Burma military coup in 2021, no fewer than 783 women have been injured or killed due to military attacks, including airstrikes and drone strikes. Across all areas, women continue to suffer from unsafe conditions, inequality, and a lack of respect.

On this occasion of International Women’s Day marks 113 years of IWD this year. IWD was first celebrated in 1911, and the UN adopted International Women’s Day in 1977 on March 8th, and ever since then, women around the world have celebrated March 8th as IWD. Today, the theme for IWD is “Inspire Inclusion.” KWO feels that this theme is very relevant not only for the Karen situation but also for the situation in Burma as a whole. KWO and the Women’s League of Burma, and other women’s groups in Burma have been actively working on the inclusion of women at decision-making and leadership levels across our societies. Although we have made some progress, we are still in our struggle to see women included at all levels of decision-making that impact women’s lives.

25th November 2023

Today is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marking the beginning of 16 Days of Activism that concludes on International Human Rights Day (10th December). This day holds particular significance for Karen women, as it symbolizes our ongoing fight against violence directed at women, with the aim of fostering respect, equality, and value within our community.

This year’s theme is “Let’s create a community free from violence against women.” Despite our decades-long efforts, we have not yet succeeded in realizing this vision. As part of the 16 days of activism, I want to emphasize five key actions to eliminate violence against women:

  1. Educate ourselves about violence against women and its impact.
  2. Reject violence against women in our community.
  3. Advocate for the creation of women’s protection laws.
  4. Take action against perpetrators without favoritism.
  5. Support the victims of violence against women.

KWO releases Briefing Paper calling for a stop to violence against women in Burma.

Thousands of people in Burma have been killed, injured, arrested, and tortured by the State Administration Council (SAC) junta and its military forces. The SAC has tried to take control of the country, using brutal and extreme violence against the civilian population and creating a humanitarian crisis. We see their violence everywhere. Nationwide, more than one million people are now displaced from their homes. The junta has scaled up attacks in ethnic administration areas, targetting civilians, including in Kawthoolei, our Karen homeland. Approximately 254,000 women and children are displaced in Kawthoolei, and face extreme violence every day. KWO calls on the international community to help stop the violence.”

November 25th marks the “International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women”. The theme chosen this year by women in our community is: “No one is above the law”. This is a message of warning to the perpetrators of violence and it is a message of comfort to the victims of violence. Violence against women is a crime in the communities, and countries we live in. There are local, national, and international laws which clearly forbid violence against women and girls, and clearly state what penalties there are for those who break the law. Everyone is governed by these laws, no matter who they are.
